Many years ago, I was a military cadet who had to write a term paper for an American history class. My subject was espionage, and whether or not Senator Joe McCarthy of Wisconsin was accurate in saying there were many security risks and loyalty risks in positions of government.
There was no Internet in the 1970s. My “cutting edge” sources were the Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature (a list of articles by topic in major magazines) and the Congressional Record. I spent some time in the West Point Library looking up these articles and reading the Congressional Record.
I had a list of those who McCarthy had publicly accused of being security risks (people whose circumstances like debt, substance abuse, infidelity, or perverse sexuality made them potential targets of blackmail). These people were not spies, but were vulnerable people who should have been kept away from sensitive positions, I also had a list of those who McCarthy had publicly accused of being loyalty risks. These people would include Communists, Nazis, socialists, fascists, anarchists, and jihadists …. and agents of foreign governments like the Soviet Union, Germany, or Britain.
The evidence I read in the articles and the congressional hearings indicated McCarthy was right on most of the people he named. So that’s what I reported.
Communist Alger Hiss. Lied about his treason, convicted of perjury.
The colonel who was my history prof gave me a D. He said I was wrong because the people had been cleared by those whose job it was to make background checks. I said the evidence showed these people shouldn’t have passed background checks, given their situations or loyalties, and it was proper for Joe McCarthy to question their positions in government.
I asked for a review, which was dumb. Two officers who were my prof’s subordinates gave me an F. They needed good ratings from him more than they needed to find in my favor because I was right. My prof was uncomfortable with the junior officers’ brown-nosing him, so he kept the grade at D.
Fortunately, I aced every other assignment in that class and I still got an A. But I was still pissed.
In the 1990s, after Boris Yeltsin came to power in the Soviet Union and allowed states to leave the gulag of nations, he released a lot of information on the Soviet government’s spying over the decades. The info implicated many people who had long been whitewashed by the media and the politicians.
And in 1995, Senator Daniel Moynihan (D-NY) made public the existence of the Venona Papers. Moynihan did not try to posthumously vindicate the work of Joe McCarthy against subversion in government, but the Venona Papers and the Soviet archives spoke for themselves for McCarthy without any help from Moynihan.
What were the Venona Papers?
Per Wikipedia, a left-of-center outfit, this:
“The Venona project was a counterintelligence program initiated by the United States Army’s Signal Intelligence Service (later the National Security Agency) that ran from February 1, 1943 until October 1, 1980. The purpose of the Venona project was the decryption of messages transmitted by the intelligence agencies of the Soviet Union (e.g. the NKVD, the KGB, and the GRU). During the 37-year duration of the Venona project, the Signal Intelligence Service obtained approximately 3,000 Soviet messages (only some of which were ever decrypted); the signals intelligence yield included discovery of the Cambridge Five espionage ring in the UK and Soviet espionage of the Manhattan Project in the U.S. for the Soviet atomic bomb project. The Venona project remained secret for more than 15 years after it concluded, and some of the decoded Soviet messages were not declassified and published until 1995.”
“Venona has added significant information to the case of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, making it clear Julius was guilty of espionage, and also showing that Ethel, while not acting as a principal, still acted as an accessory, had full knowledge of Julius’s espionage activity and played the main role in the recruitment of her brother for atomic espionage.”
“The Venona decryptions were also important in the exposure of the atomic spy Klaus Fuchs. Some of the earliest messages decrypted concerned information from a scientist at the Manhattan Project, who was referred to by the code names of CHARLES and REST. One such message from Moscow to New York, dated April 10, 1945, called information provided by CHARLES “of great value.” Noting that the information included “data on the atomic mass of the nuclear explosive” and “details on the explosive method of actuating” the atomic bomb, the message requested further technical details from CHARLES. Investigations based on the VENONA decryptions eventually identified CHARLES and REST as Fuchs in 1949.”
According to the Moynihan Commission on Government Secrecy, the complicity of both Alger Hiss and Harry Dexter White is conclusively proven by Venona, stating “The complicity of Alger Hiss of the State Department seems settled. As does that of Harry Dexter White of the Treasury Department.” In his 1998 book, Senator Moynihan expressed certainty about Hiss’s identification by Venona as a Soviet spy, writing “Hiss was indeed a Soviet agent and appears to have been regarded by Moscow as its most important.”
Who were these guys?
Harry Dexter White was a high-ranking Treasury Department official and State Department liaison who provided info to the Soviets. White put in place the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to aid the globalists and the Soviets. He also helped financially destabilize the Chiang Kai-Shek government in China, which aided Mao and the Communists in beating Chiang’s people. Former Communist Elizabeth Bentley, who regretted her spy work, came out of the cold and implicated White in 1945. He didn’t leave government service until 1947. White died of a heart attack after testifying before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1948.
Alger Hiss was a high-ranking State Department official who transmitted American diplomatic service info to the Soviets thru courier Whittaker Chambers. Hiss was with a doddering feeble FDR at Yalta, and helped engineer the sellout that gave Eastern Europe to Stalin, and gave him three votes in the General Assembly of the United Nations to America’s one vote. FDR died within weeks of the Yalta conference.
Chambers repented of his Communism, asked Hiss to do likewise, and when Hiss would not, Chambers confessed to his deeds and implicated Hiss. Chambers testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1948. Hiss sued Chambers for defamation, and Chambers cut Hiss’ throat by producing the “Pumpkin Papers” – the microfilm of documents Hiss stole and had Chambers give the Soviets. The statute of limitations had run out on the direct proof Chambers had so jurors convicted Hiss on lesser perjury charges in early 1950.
The Venona Papers (the records) listed a large number of American politicians and government payrollers mentioned in intercepts of Soviet messages. This cleared some people accused wrongly of loyalty or security problems, but nailed others.
Other researchers who checked Soviet archives and provided notes were able to show a large number of people McCarthy had named as loyalty risks or security risks had helped the Soviets.
So I as a lowly cadet was right, and my prof, an exalted colonel, was wrong. Facts and the truth are independent of rank.
Joe McCarthy, USMC. Semper Fi!
Why didn’t the Venona papers see the light of day until 1995?
They were part of a secret program. Some say Army Chief of Staff Omar Bradley didn’t trust the Truman administration with direct knowledge of the intercepts due to leakers on his staff, so he hid the existence of the Venona Program from Truman.
Others say Truman was skeptical of the info the Army and CIA and FBI gave him because he couldn’t believe FDR would allow so many scumbags to get into high places in his administrations. Truman, a loyal Democrat, kept most of FDR’s appointees, even the toxic ones.
Still others say Truman as a politician feared damage to his party. Truman also called the Alger Hiss case “a red herring.” Freshman congressman Richard Nixon had shown Hiss to be a liar when he questioned Hiss about mundane things that could be checked against the public record. Hiss denied knowing Chambers. Chambers gave details about Hiss, and his testimony was accurate. Hiss’ contradiction of the public record made him look like a lying weasel.
Truman also stuck up for other members of his team who would let him down.
Truman, who was basically a good man, did push back against Stalin in Europe and did commit to the Korean War. But he underestimated the extent of Communist penetration of his own administration. Right after Hiss’ conviction, Joe McCarthy made a speech in Wheeling, WV about Communist subversion that made it one of the top issues in the country. McCarthy was able to damage Truman’s credibility, help elect a number of GOP candidates to the Senate in 1950 and 1952, and help General Dwight Eisenhower win the election of 1952.
But the Establishment was bigger than McCarthy. All Democrats and the GOP people we today would call RINOs savagely attacked Joe McCarthy in some of the vilest terms imaginable. When he married his staffer Jean Kerr, the Left falsely said she was sterile because Joe forced her to get an abortion. (Joe and Jean adopted a daughter.) McCarthy was a friend to whistleblowers on corruption or subversion in government, which angered Establishment types. Many media people hated McCarthy because in a DC bar, he kicked Establishment Washington Post and NBC writer Drew Pearson in the crotch and dropped him. (And the media today thinks President Trump is hard on them.)
Jean Kerr and Joe McCarthy
Eisenhower, behind the scenes, struck at McCarthy after McCarthy exposed espionage in the Army. The Senate, led by Republican opponents of McCarhty, then censured McCarthy in late 1954 for his violations of “decorum” in that body. Prescott Bush ( R-CT), the slimy father of George Bush (41) voted for censure. Joe’s war buddy John Kennedy (D-Mass.) did not vote against him even though Lyndon Johnson (D-TX), the Senate Minority Leader, got virtually all other Democrats in the Senate to do so.
McCarthy wasn’t much of a GOPer anyway. He was pro-black civil rights, pro-farmer, and pro-union. He was also a coarse outsider in DC. He was more at home harvesting crops or drinking with Service buddies or chasing women (before Jean Kerr made an honest man of him) than he was at attending formal DC soirees. But because as one man he dared to question the intelligence and integrity of the DC Establishment, Democrats and Republicans united in trying to destroy him.
McCarthy, unbowed, was the first GOP senator to come out against Eisenhower’s involvement in the Vietnam War. He said all the war would do was kill Americans for no valid purpose. Hepatitis aided by his heavy drinking killed Joe McCarthy in 1957, while he was still in office.
A 2/8/2000 World Net Daily article commemorating the 50th anniversary of the speech Joe McCarthy made in Wheeling, WV about subversion in government noted:
“Professor Arthur Herman (‘s) new book, “Joseph McCarthy: Reexamining the Life and Legacy of America’s Most Hated Senator,” and featured in the Sunday New York Times Magazine, shows the vindication of most of McCarthy’s charges. Herman, who is also coordinator of the Smithsonian’s Western Heritage Program, said that the accuracy of McCarthy’s charges “was no longer a matter of debate,” that they are “now accepted as fact.” However, the term “McCarthyism” still remains in the language.
Asked whether McCarthy had understood all the forces arrayed against him, Herman said no, that McCarthy hadn’t realized he’d be fighting against much of the Washington establishment. President Truman was fearful that exposures would reflect on key Democrat officials, he said, and big media and the academic world were very leftist, a heritage of the Depression and World War II. High government officials also feared investigations of their past appointments and associations with people who turned out to be communists or sympathizers.
That was the reason McCarthy was so demonized, he said.”
Herman was right, to a point. He didn’t say McCarthy thought he’d have Republican help. But his president and half the GOP senators turned against him.
Anti-Americans in the State Department over the years have done a lot of harm.
John F. Kennedy, as a congressman, criticized the ineptness and/or treachery involved in the fall of China to Communism. It didn’t matter to him it was Democrats who were to blame.
North Korea puppet dictator Kim Il-sung, urged on by Stalin and Mao, in 1950 sent his Red Koreans to conquer South Korea. This happened not long after Dean Acheson, who took over the State Department from George Marshall in the Truman cabinet (Marshall would resurface as Truman’s Secretary of Defense in 1950), had stupidly said publicly that South Korea lay outside of America’s defense perimeter. Acheson’s top China hand Owen Lattimore said, “The thing to do was let South Korea fall, but not to let it look like we pushed it.”
This led to the Korean War, which cost more than 36,000 Americans their lives. The Reds cost my Uncle Don some of the best years of his life and multiple wounds from the Chinese bastards who used his medic’s cross for target practice.
It was revealed Lattimore lied in a number of publications about Soviet prison camps and other items to the benefit of Communists. Lattimore was a sympathizer of Communism who gave them cover as a writer. He was later outed as a Communist by former Communist Louis Budenz. Lattimore would be indicted for perjury for lying under oath before the McCarran Committee about his connections to Communist and leftist groups. Left-leaning federal judge Luther Youngdahl in 1955 dismissed the case on technicalities. Ike’s DOJ may have tanked the case.
McCarthy listed Lattimore as a security risk and as a Communist. He was both. Lattimore was still allowed to teach in college, but left for England when JFK became president.
Patrick McCarran (D-NV), who ran the committee, died in 1954. He was Joe McCarthy’s mentor in the Senate even though they were of different parties. Both men hated Communism.
Persons unknown in the State Department leaked to the New York Times in 1956 that the Hungarian Uprising in so many words was not the concern of the American government. Eisenhower was president in 1956. This was a green light to Soviet dictator Khrushchev to smash the Hungarians.
April in Baghdad
Bush 41 diplomat April Glaspie, a native of Canada, in 1990 gave Iraq’s dictator Saddam Hussein the word that his border dispute with the Kuwaitis was not a concern to the Bush Administration. Saddam interpreted this as an okay to take over the little country. This led to wars against the people of Iraq during both Bushes’ administrations.
But other government agencies started to join the State Department in attracting anti-Americans.
The CIA were involved in the murders of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo, South Vietnam leaders Ngo Diem and his brother Ngo Nhu, and Chilean leftist leader Salvador Allende.
Some say the CIA were so incompetent in trying to kill Castro that the Cuban Red dictator struck back and had JFK murdered. Others say the CIA and the FBI worked with Lyndon Johnson to have Kennedy murdered so he could become president.
Kennedy wanted to shatter the CIA because they were outlaws. Even Harry Truman, who created the CIA, said likewise after JFK’s murder. And Truman was an LBJ supporter, not a Kennedy supporter.
Another guy in my report on Joe McCarthy – John Abt – showed up in the JFK murder. Remember, Kennedy and Joe McCarthy were pals, and Joe dated John’s sister Patricia. Joe was right on Abt. After McCarthy questioned Abt, a government lawyer and pal of Communists in labor circles, Abt became counsel for the Communist Party. Was I naive for thinking Abt was a problem child? Oswald, a Communist and Castroite by conviction (say some) or by Deep State cover (say others) asked Dallas police to get Abt to represent him after they arrested him.
The CIA, with former CIA director and VP George Bush’s assistance, turned President Reagan’s aid to the Contras plan into a drugrunning, murder for hire and money laundering scheme involving CIA asset Arkansas governor Bill Clinton. Oliver North and other CIA operatives mocked President Reagan and praised Bush, according to Terry Reed, a CIA man and author of the book “Compromised: Clinton, Bush, and the CIA.” Terry was in on meetings with North, Clinton, and future Bush AG William Barr. Reed also disclosed some of the CIA’s illegal activity was designed to force Reagan out of office, and they almost succeeded.
John Hinckley, a family friend of the Bushes, tried a less complicated route. He shot and nearly killed President Reagan in 1981.
The FBI, which rose from ineffectiveness to professionalism and patriotism in the 1950s, slid once again. J. Edgar Hoover kept his job by helping LBJ spy on Dr. Martin Luther King and others. Politics drove law enforcement.
The Bushes, Clintons, and Obamas have put a number of anti-American operatives into the CIA, the NSA, and the FBI over the three decades they held the controls of this nation in their slimy hands. These people are in place throughout the government to attack opponents of the Deep State.
Why all the history?
Donald Trump, appearing yesterday with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, had every right to show the failings and the biases of the intelligence community and the FBI and the Justice Department. For the last three generations, they have earned it.
Donald Trump, if he had his druthers, would copy Andrew Jackson’s “rotation in office” or “spoils system” staffing. Since he won, he and those he appointed would toss incumbents out of government jobs (except the military) and replace them with Trump loyalists or those who could work with Trump loyalists. Civil service rules wouldn’t protect obstructionists and criminals in government jobs. Payrollers could lose jobs when a different adminstration came in. The turnover prevents empire-building.
Instead, we have a civil service setup that provides jobs till retirement for too many incompetent and willfully un-American feds.
What is different now than in the 1950s is that there were only a few thousand Communists and other nogoodniks in the federal government. Now the government is lousy with anti-American scum in all the ranks. If you fire criminals, other criminals in the agencies will work against the Republic and the people.
Ironically, the Democrats who complained the most about Mr. Trump trying to reduce tensions with Russia copied the Communist system the most faithfully. They took over the police and prosecutor and judge and intel agencies and abused the powers of these agencies to harm their opponents and the public. Most career Republicans have gone along with it, probably due to blackmail, or to guarantee of some jobs due to the pull of globalist corporations not yet formally Demcrat.
In fact, Vladimir Putin offered to produce for questioning the 12 Russian nationals that independent Nazi Robert Mueller got indicted Friday (which was a gross attempt by Mueller and Rosenstein to undercut President Trump while he was on his way to a meeting with Putin).
(Mueller, if he had a real spy case, would have entrapped and exposed the spies, He didn’t because he couldn’t. All Mueller can do is abuse his powers and run interference for organized crime bosses Whitey Bulger and Hillary Clinton.)
In return, Putin at the press conference asked for American help on bringing William Browder to justice. Browder, the grandson of Communist Party USA chief Earl Browder, after the fall of Soviet Communism became a scavenger and allegedly stole $1.5 billion (with a B) from the Russian people. Browder renounced his American citizenship in 1998 to avoid taxes on his Russian grabfest. He now lives in Britain.
At the presser, Putin named Browder, called him a crook, said he financed Hillary, and demanded the money back. Russian officials have convicted Browder of tax evasion in absentia.
Putin also mentioned George Soros in a negative way. Soros, the billionaire parasite capitalist, who funds riots in America and elsewhere, profited from plundering property from Jews during World War Two and has profited from betting against smaller nations’ currencies, then fomenting disruptions to ruin the currencies’ values.
Instead of taking up Putin’s offer, the Deep State attacked President Trump like paranoid dopers.
What did Putin and Trump discuss in private?
Could it be Putin was outing their collaboration with Democrats and neverTrumpers? Collaboration is not illegal for Russians in Russia, but it is illegal for Democrats and neverTrumpers.
Did Putin reprise Boris Yeltsin in outing Americans who sold out their country? We will see.
President Trump did not criticize the American intelligence community at the press conference until media people tried to get him to rebuke Putin publicly for allegedly directing interference in the 2016 elections. Instead, Trump focused on how he was trying to reduce tensions and mention areas in which he and Putin had made progress, as if avoiding needless war was a good thing. How novel.
When challenged by reporters at the press conference, Mr. Trump critiqued the FBI for failure to get Hillary’s server or the Democratic National Committee servers that the Pakistani Moslem Awan Family Hackers hacked. Over the weekend he noted the Obama Administration claimed to be aware of the hacking by Russians but did nothing to stop it. In other words, Mr. Obama didn’t view it as a threat to Hillary’s chances.
In other words, the anti-Americans who direct and fill the ranks of the federal intellingence and law enforcement agencies are openly trying to overthrow President Trump after they failed in ther missions to deny him he presidency. He is helping them out themselves as criminals. Vermin like Peter Strzok are the Alger Hisses and Owen Lattimores of today.
It turned out Hillary crapped more than her pantsuits. Her server and the Democratic National Committee servers were easily hackable due to poor security. Trump’s communications and Republican communications were harder to hack.
At the press conference, Putin brought up the concept of “fix” when he talked about Browder moving money out of Russia. He mentioned perhaps intelligence agents helped Browder do so.
Hillary’s foundation got about $150 million after she okayed a deal allowing Putin’s government to pocket 20% of America’s uranium reserves. Mueller, FBI No. 2 Andrew McCabe, and Rod Rosenstein, the anti-Trump No. 2 in the Justice Department, all were in on the fix.
Putin knows how the game is played; he said he know how to fake dossiers. The fake Steele dossier comes to mind.
Perhaps the FBI can explain why they never troubled themselves to get Hillary’s or DNC servers. Or investigate the murder of young Seth Rich, who is suspected of turning over proof of Democrat cheating against Bernie Sanders to the Wikileaks people. Or question Obama and DOJ people and FBI people over the Obama administration’s failure to stop alleged Russian hacking.
And perhaps the FBI, and former CIA chief Brennan and his CIA criminals, and former NSA director James (VD) Clapper can explain why they planted spies and eavesdropping devices into the Trump campaign instead of telling him they suspected Russian shenanigans.
But don’t hold your breath for any of this.
Mueller, Rosenstein, the DOJ putschists, and the FBI putschists – New Copperheads all – decided to shame Donald Trump before his meeting with Russian strongman Putin.
Trump returned the favor with interest.
The Democrats, and the same Republican bedwetters who want to make sure they are “principled critics of Trump,” have attacked him again.
Meanwhile, Tucker Carlson of the Daily Caller made two interesting and correct calls on the website 7/17/2018. He said Mexico has influenced American elections a lot more than Russia by sending illegals into the country, who vote illegally.
And he also reported truthfully Putin was at the presser in so many words begging President Trump for mercy on oil and natural gas sales. Russia is dependent on these sales, and Trump’s ramping up of American production and pushing energy sales to Europe is cutting Russia’s profit per measure of gas and oil, and is cutting the absolute amount of energy Russia was exporting, a double hit on the Russian economy.
The media, the Democrats, and many GOPer wimps “forgot” to tell the American public competing for market share in energy with Russia, like President Trump has America doing, is weakening the Russians in many areas. Mr. Trump doesn’t have to rub Putin’s face in it publicly for it to be true.
Most media outlets reported this afternoon that Mr. Trump said he mis-spoke in his press conference with Mr. Putin. Hardly any of them reported much about Putin’s offer to present the indicted 12 Russians for questioning. Per Breitbart:
“The president said that he accepted the conclusion of the intelligence agencies that Russia attempted to influence the election, but repeated that there was “no collusion” between his campaign and the Russians.
The President vowed to fight any attempt by Russia or any other countries to interfere in United States elections.
“We’re doing everything in our power to prevent Russian interference in 2018,” Trump said.
Trump blamed former President Barack Obama for failing to respond to the election hacking threat from Russia as well as former intelligence officials John Brennan and James Clapper.
Trump needled the press for paying the former officials “a lot of money” to serve as contributors to their networks.”
In other words, President Trump issued a “correction” that became an attack. He knows the Russians dd not help him win. Rosenstein admitted as much Friday when he claimed Russian hacking attempts didn’t alter a single vote, and no Americans were indicted for any wrongdoing he says the Russians committed.
President Trump is not letting the intelligence community off the hook for crimes its members committed against him and his voters. Instead he is spotlighting the criminal behavors to prepare for the prosecution and punishment of those who deserve it. Mutiny deserves punishment.
Unlike Joe McCarthy, Donald Trump is not going to wait 40 years for vindication. Mr. Trump is outing the ccriminal deeds who oppose him NOW.
The lessons of all of this?
Study history for ideas and how people acted to respond to trouble or to make trouble.
As I noted earlier, the Democrats learned from the Soviets … and from the Nazis. They have grabbed control of the police, the prosecutors, the intel, and the judges.
Leftists also control schools, many churches, the media, and popular culture.
They have tried to isolate their opponents from the public and from each other.
Donald Trump is not Joe McCarthy. He is much smarter, much richer, and much more adaptable. He cannot be isolated because he tweets and he is a compelling news figure. Many in blue collar America appreciate his work. So do the rank and file in the first responder and military professions
President Trump will not be isolated as long as he keeps his promises and as long as he exposes his opponents and holds them up for public ridicule. The Deep State swine aren’t used to anyone returning fire like Mr. Trump does.
Mr. Trump is a daily civics lesson. In the past week, he has exposed the Euros on tariffs, and has shown they are con artists looking to partner with Russia on a gas project that provides them with much of their energy while claiming they need our protection from Russia.
When the corruptocrats in the Justice Department and in the FBI tried to undermine President Trump’s position before his meeting with Putin, he exposed them for the corrupt and incompetent lawmen and prosecutors they are. He also let Putin troll them on the Russian indictments.
What most missed was that Trump has Putin in a bad way by ramping up American oil and natural gas production. Trump didn’t have to rub Putin’s face in it …. Putin basically admitted it.
And as for the McCarthy saga?
Mr. Trump has many more criminal opponents with government jobs than McCarthy had.
The public record isn’t often wrong.
Follow the evidence to determine the truth. This is what I did and Mueller isn’t doing.
The evidence I found led me to conclude as a 20-year-old student that Joe McCarthy acted accurately and properly in outing those in government, courts, and politics who posed threats to America.
Roughly 20 years later, sets of secret records released for the first time confirmed my assessment.
Truth is truth. It doesn’t care who proclaims it, and it doesn’t care which criminals it harms.
But witnessing to the truth can grievously harm honest witnesses. The Deep State attacks whistleblowers even worse now than they attacked former Communists and honest federal agents like Otto Otepka and politicians like Joe McCarthy who outed the traitors in government and academia and the media.
I found out the hard way two officers were more intent on pleasing their boss than hearing my case justly. The federal intelligence and law enforcement communities are now full of such asswipes. We will have to bypass them and outsmart them, and eventually remove them.
We will have to use diligence in finding the truth, and common sense in determining when and how to bring truth to light.
But then, we are this dark nation’s light and salt, as long as we adhere to the will of God.
